1. Prayer alone will not save your marriage.

I believe in the power of prayer. The bible clearly expresses on numerous accounts that we should pray. Jesus gave us a model for prayer in Matthew 6:9 -13, popularly known as the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus expressed these words’ “Men always ought to pray and not lose heart” in Luke 18:1. It has been expressed that prayer is the oxygen of a Christian and I couldn’t agree more. When we pray mountains move. When we pray God listens and I believe many more marriages will be better off if couples take some time to pray daily.

With the above been said, what’s the point of praying if you don’t listen to God. Prayer is a two way conversation between you and God. You make your request known to God in prayer and He speaks back to you. This is not an article about hearing from God and as such I will focus on a clear way God speaks, His written word.

Couples what’s the point of praying to God about your marriage when you violate the marriage covenant daily in your actions because you don’t take time to read and obey His writing word about marriage.

Understand that once you get married, your actions towards your spouse is vital in relation to your prayers been answered. Scriptures expresses it this way

Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Peter 3:7

Couples understand that the word of God is the oxygen your marriage needs and God’s presence is reflected in your marriage to the degree His word radiates in you. Feed on His word daily and watch your prayer life and marriage flourish.

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples – John 15:7-8

  1. The Wrong Person

This internal battle “I must have married the wrong person”; is one that many couples face and your ability to reconcile this feeling is key to the success of your marriage. The notion that I am experiencing difficulty in my marriage because I married the wrong person is a partial truth that needs to be exposed. Regardless of who you marry, there are issues and situations you will have to work through. As such, the idea that my marital issues will not exist if I simply married the right person is not an accurate statement. Yes if you had married a different person, you may not face the current issue you are facing martially. However that does not negate that fact that you will not have to work through some other type of issue.

One of the greatest lie in marriage is if you married the right person, then you will not have issues to deal with in your marriage.

Nothing can be further from the truth. You can’t have a dog or cat and not change your life. Once you introduce a new variable (in this case a person) into your life, you will have to make the necessary adjustment to accommodate this new variable or person in your life.

The thought that you married the wrong spouse is usually a sign of discomfort in one or more areas of your marriage. Often times when couples are not fulfilled in life or marriage they often attribute that feeling to the fact that they married the wrong person. Perhaps because they believe that the right person will always make them happy and fulfilled in marriage.

They forget that to have a successful marriage, you have to work out the marriage principles and not just marry the right person.

For newlyweds, this thought often creeps in because you are in the adjustment phase of your marriage, usually the first 7 years of your marriage.

As always, marriage is a journey and not a destination. The bible is the blue print while the Holy Spirit is your guide.

Love Always
