I recently attended a leadership training program hosted by RCCG Victory House in Oak Park and I heard this statement expressed “You need to be FAT”. I must say it wasn’t the first time I was hearing that statement however it struck a never in me. Over the next few weeks, I meditated on what it means to be FAT and came up with the conclusion that in addition to being FAT, my marriage must be FAT. I must continue to demonstrate Faithfulness in my marriage. I must continue to be Available to my spouse and children. I must maintain a Teachable spirit in my marriage. I believe if more couples are FAT in their marriage, many more marriages will flourish like God intended. Particularly among young couples and newlywed where the need to be faithful to their marriage vows, available to each other and maintain a teachable spirit cannot be overemphasized.

Every successful marriage needs FAT couples.

Faithful

Faithfulness is a function of the heart. This is the core of your marriage foundation. Faithfulness is also at the center of our Christian faith because without faith it is impossible to please God as expressed in the biblical account of Hebrews. Likewise, without faithfulness it is impossible to please your spouse because you lack the commitments, sacrifice and consistency that comes with being faithful. There is nothing worthwhile or of significance that will not require the commitment that come from being faithful and marriage is no different. Any boy can play around and any girl can lay around, however it takes a man or woman that is faithful to stay committed to her spouse.

Available

Couples this is one area that is very vital to the success of your marriage. I am not sure if there is a better way to put it, you have to be available to your spouse. Your spouse didn’t agree to get married if you will not be available. You have to be emotionally, physically, spiritually, mentally and financially available to your spouse. I requires creating time for each to despite your busy schedule. Ensure that you make your spouse is a crucial step in being available in your marriage. It is hard to build any relationship if the individuals are not present. Also understand that being available is not just being physically present but emotionally and mentally absent. Don’t be so poor in your marriage that you can’t even afford to pay attention to your spouse. The power generated when couples are available to each other is enormous in strengthen your marriage. God understanding this power expressed “I will never leave you nor forsake you” Hebrews 13:5. There is nothing worse than you being physically present but your spouse feels all alone, abandoned and forsaken. Scriptures expresses it this way in the book of Ephesians “being subject to one another out of reverence for Chris” Eph 5:21

Teachable

“Many marriage would be better if the husband and the wife clearly understood that they are on the same side” Zig Ziglar. Couples maintaining a teachable spirit in your marriage is vital to the success of your marriage. Adjusting to your new life together takes patient, trust and understanding. Which are qualities of a teachable spirit. The goal is to work together for the success of the marriage. Scripture with regards to having a teachable spirit put it this way

“Give instruction to a wise man and he will become even wiser; Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning” Proverbs 9:9

Seek opportunities to grow in your marriage and a great way to do that is to learn from current situations and ask simple questions. Such as honey what ways do you think I can make this marriage better? Again the goal is not to be complacent but seek ways to improve your marriage by growing together.

As always, marriage is a journey and not a destination. The bible is the blue print while the Holy Spirit is your guide need.

Love Always
