In my first article on why a trouble marriage does not necessarily mean you married the wrong person, I wrote about the story of Isaac and Rebekah. I expressed how despite seeking the face of God before getting married, they did not have any child for 20 years. It is important to note that both Abraham and Isaac (Father and Son) faced the same issue of navigating bareness. It is also important to note that they handled the same issue differently. Abraham at some point compromised with his maid, however Isaac stayed the course to remain faithful to his wife Rebekah. Isaac must have learnt from his father’s (Abraham) experience to trust God regardless of whatever circumstance he faces. Perhaps some of the issues you are faced with in your marriage today, your parents faced similar issues and overcame them. My suggestion is that you take some times to study the marriage of your parents or the marriage you grew up in and trust God’s faithfulness through it all.
Couples, I will like to reinforce the fact that adversity does not translate to absence of God. Neither does issues in your marriage translate that you married the wrong person or that you are not spiritual enough. While there is no doubt that spiritual maturity will prevent certain adversities, it does not eliminate adversity completely in your life. Couples if spiritual maturity eliminated all forms of adversity, then there will be no need for Jesus to warm us.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” – John 16:33
There would be nothing to overcome. The above scripture clearly reinforces our identity as children of God. Jesus expresses that you will overcome adversity and not that there will be no adversity.
Couples let’s examine the life of Jesus as we dig deer in understanding the basic truth that issues in marriage does not mean you married the wrong person.
Scripture explicitly expresses that “The holy Spirit Led Jesus where He will be tempted”
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil – Matthew 4:1
I thought if the Holy spirit was leading you there will be no issues. Everything will be perfect. There will be no temptation neither will the devil be able to show his ugly face. The truth is that when the Holy Spirit is leading, your victory is reinforced over the issue.
Couples understand that when the Holy Spirit is your guide in marriage, he shows you how to defuse potential issues in your home. He also teaches you how to resolve issues in your home. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit ultimately helps you release your potential on earth by letting you understand that your marriage is simply a tool to expand God’s kingdom on earth.
Couples the reality is that regardless of who you marry, there are issues you are going to have to walk through in your marriage. Walking through issues in a marriage or a troubled marriage doesn’t validate the absence of God.
I will leave you with this the day you lose your desire to fight for your marriage because of adversity is the day divorce starts knocking on your door. Continue to seek the presence of God despite adversity and watch your marriage flourish.
Always remember that Marriage is a Journey not a destination. The bible is the blue print while the Holy Spirit is your guide.
