Sometimes I wonder why of the twelve disciples, Judas was the only one betrayer, despite the key role of treasurer that he played in the ministry of Jesus. Reading through St. John’s account of the story, I see a silent matter in the life of Judas that was ignored for a long time. This silent matter was what the devil eventually explored and made use of when he needed a vessel for the ultimate crime of betraying Jesus. Now I see why apostle Paul advised the Corinthians to not be ignorant of the devices of the devil.
“lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices”.
2Corinthians.2:11(nkjv)
Before now, Judas has been found to have been secretly stealing from the money box as he was the one in charge of it. If you were as curious as I am, you’d want to ask if Jesus even knew about his theft.
This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the money box, and he used to take what was put in it.
John.12:6(nkjv)
All this while. You might even be wondering why he was saddled with that responsibility, since Jesus, in his omniscience knew he had a weakness with money and greed.
Well, I’ll save that gist for some other time.
Looking at the life of Judas, we can see the effect of ignoring a weakness and allowing it to thrive for long. The devil succeeded into deceiving him to think its not a big deal. Every time he stole money from the box, the devil could have suggested to him that Jesus would understand his seemingly legitimate reasons for stealing.
Are you a reader of this post and you’ve also been deceived into indulging in that secret sin for a long time now? Maybe you also have a seemingly justifiable reason for indulging in such practices. I tell you today that there’s great danger lurking if you don’t repent. You may not see any harm now, but believe me when I tell you that devil has a plan. Judas, every time he stole from the money never saw his acts of stealing graduate into ultimately betraying Jesus. Even at the point of betraying Jesus, he must have thought that Jesus, in his omnipotence would set himself free in no time and get back to preaching again. Only for him to be shocked watching Jesus die helplessly on the cross. Every time you’re tempted to indulge in that sin, the devil deceives you into thinking that’ll be the last time, but nothing could be further from the truth as it only strengthens the bond of addiction to the act/habit.
As we all know, Judas ended up committing suicide as he couldn’t handle the guilt. The wages of sin is still death as clearly stated in the word of God. Wisdom now requires us to understand that that death may not be sudden but gradual. Judas started dying from the first day he decided to steal from the money box and not when he eventually hung himself in the garden of Akeldama.
Resist the devil now, don’t give room for a pointless dialogue with him.
